KOTA KINABALU, MALAYSIA – In August 2025, Emily, East Asia Chapter Lead of

EcoFabrica, led a team of environmentally passionate volunteers from Southwest

China on a meaningful journey through Malaysia, combining wildlife conservation

with sustainable craft discovery.

The team began their expedition with a two-day volunteer program at the Bornean

Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where they assisted in daily care activities and

learned about the critical challenges facing this endangered species. They continued

their ecological education at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, observing native

wildlife including gibbons and endemic birds, and explored the unique alpine flora

and fauna of Mount Kinabalu.

The journey culminated in Kota Kinabalu’s artisan market with “The Green Hunt:

Sustainable Finds in Malaysia” – an interactive activity challenging volunteers to

identify and document local sustainable crafts, including rattan weaving, naturally

dyed batik, and coconut shell tableware. The team interviewed local artisans and

produced short films to share their stories, highlighting how traditional craftsmanship

embodies both reverence for nature and human ingenuity.

To commemorate the journey, EcoFabrica designed exclusive volunteer uniforms

and tote bags featuring Malaysia’s unique wildlife and plants, reflecting the brand’s

commitment to raising environmental awareness through wearable storytelling.

“This experience deepened our understanding of biodiversity and sustainable livelihoods,” said Emily. “We hope to inspire more young people in Asia to protect natural heritage and support conscious craftsmanship.”

Supporting this volunteer trip is part of EcoFabrica’s ongoing effort to bridge fashion,

conservation, and youth leadership across borders.
