In November 2024, a student-run charity flea market successfully engaged the South Surrey community, attracting over 500 visitors. The event featured more than 20 vendors offering second-hand items, clothing, hand-made crafts, and art, complemented by live music. Organized by James and fellow student leaders from a few local student groups, the market served as a vibrant platform for community connection and advocacy for sustainable living practices.
Key Significance:A notable aspect of the event was its engagement with the local Chinese community, many of whom served as vendors. The market intentionally introduced and promoted the concept of second-hand consumption within a cultural context where it is not a traditional consumer habit. The aim was to provide a positive, first-hand experience with circular economies and cultivate a shift toward more sustainable, long-term consumer behavior.
Organizer Quote:“This market was about more than buying and selling. It was a hands-on demonstration of sustainable community building. We were especially proud to create a welcoming space that introduced the benefits and value of second-hand consumption to new audiences,” said James, Founder of EcoFabrica.
